Assassin's Creed and console musings

I seem to have developed an Assassin's Creed fetish. I realized this when I bought one of the novels. The Assassin's Creed novels by Oliver Bowden are the worst books I've ever read. They have cliche phrases that break the mood of the scene because they don't belong in that time period. He obviously never went to school to learn how to write, because any language or creative writing professor could have told him what he was doing wrong. Despite that the book is so bad that I've never been able to finishing reading it, I still buy them whenever I see them at Walmart (Walmart usually sells them for $2 less than everywhere else).

I've also been jilted by Assassin's Creed. I pre-ordered a Nintendo 3DS with the understanding that eventually I would get an Assassin's Creed game for it (and Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance). Then in the September 2011 issue of Nintendo Power, they confirmed that Ubisoft stopped making Assassin's Creed: Lost Legacy. I could have held out for the pink one or the Zelda one. This cancellation has made me think about the Wii U, and the promise of an Assassin's Creed game for it.

With everything going on with Nintendo of America right now (see Operation Rainfall for details), it's going to take an Assassin's Creed game on the Wii U before I buy one. I read a comment pertaining to the Wii U that put it perfectly, no one needs "an HD paperweight." Yes, the touch screen controller looks really cool, but the Wii U is going to sink faster than the 3DS if there aren't any good games to play on it. It's really nice that all the Wii controllers and accessories work with the Wii U too, but Nintendo has just been hitting its fans where it hurts. Nintendo is going to have a lot to prove with the Wii U. They're just not going to have the same fan following and dedication that they normal would. True, they've picked up some more fans with the Wii and its emphasis on casual gaming, but most of those casual gamers aren't going to be picking up a Wii U the day it comes out.

I guess I'm just vexed. I feel like good games on a console should be guaranteed. I shouldn't have to wait for good games like Assassin's Creed to come out on a console. When the Playstation 4 is finally announced, I know I won't have these issues. If the specs look great and it is a big bump up from the PS3, I'm going to want it without worrying about games that I like being available. Nintendo has something to prove to its fans, and they're going to have to work hard in order to prove it. When the Wii U comes out, I'm not buying it until Assassin's Creed is out and bundled with it. While that doesn't necessarily mean that they've proved themselves, I can't resist anything Assassin's Creed.

  1. I never liked the idea of the Nintendo 3DS's. It seems like they have more "kiddy" games than good intense games like PS3 or XBOX 360. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Kingdom Hearts. I tried to play Chain of Memories that they released on PS3 but hated it. The only ones I've liked are I, II, and Birth By Sleep. I guess I'm a Playstation, PSP kinda gal. My boyfriend LOVES Assassin's Creed and he's gotten me into it too. For some reason I can believe there's an Assassin's Creed novel. And I can also believe it sucks lol

  2. The 3DS itself is actually really cool. Yes, their games are more 'kiddish,' and now it would have better to wait for their second version of it (they're probably going to include two analog stick things since they have an accessory attachment for the 3DS coming out). Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance and Luigi's Mansion 2 are the only good games coming out for it though.

I have to agree with you about the Playstation. I love my PS2 and PS3. I'm still sold on the PSP though. While I did enjoy Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines far more than the two DS Assassin's Creed games, the controls felt a little off sometimes. Yeah, I was really disappointed with the novels. I thought I could at least read a whole one, but once he used the phrase "faster than greased lightning" in book that's supposed to take place in Italy's 1500s I couldn't handle it anymore. I love Assassin's Creed, and I'll probably buy all books but I don't think I can read them. They do have a comic that's good though. I haven't been able to find it here in AL, so I spent a bunch of money and ordered it from the Ubisoft Workshop (shipping was pretty penny since it ships from Canada). A Christmas present for myself.
